MyMP, 3MP's new digital radio station - Review - Listen online, live stream - DAB+, Easy Listening Music

It's Melbourne's new 'home of easy listening' radio station on a budget.

Background: In April 2010, 1377 3MP was changed to a talkback station. The music was subsequently moved to a digital-only station on DAB radio, under the MyMP brand - 'My Melbourne, My Music, My MP'.

MyMP now: The station has now morphed into a completely automated form with no announcers or Disc Jockeys. Initially the station was launched with no ads, but more recently (May 2010), about one advertisment is played every half hour. A disadvantage for some listeners is the lack of an hourly news segment.

The station shares the same DAB transmitter as MTR 1377, which further saves on costs. The bitrate also seems a tad too low, causing metallic-sounding artifacts to be heard on the higher notes of songs. The audio quality is worse than analogue FM.

All the stalwarts are still on the air including John Farnham, Bee Gees, ABBA, etc. Even the Dances with Wolves soundtrack is still peppered amongst the playlists. There are still the occasional 'flashbacks' to classic popular songs of the 60s and 70s.

However, much newer, contemporary styles are being introduced onto the MyMP playlist, including the likes of James Blunt, Alanis Morissette, Craig David, Delta Goodrem and even Gwen Stefani. Overall, the music selection has been modernised, albeit with songs that don't quite fit the 'easy listening' category. The old 3MP targeted the 45+ year old listener market. MyMP's new demographic now seems to be 30+ year olds.

On analogue AM, the station used to get away with playing the likes of Michael Jackson under the guise of 'easy listening' because the limited frequency response of an AM transmission 'mellowed out' the sound. On DAB+, you get the full gamut of audio frequencies (near CD quality), which accentuates the 'rocky-ness' of upbeat songs. Falling asleep to the new mix may be a bit harder.

Being one of only a few digital-only stations on the market, it can be hard to justify the purchase of a DAB+ radio just to see what's on offer. So, we have the following for you:

Sample the new station!

We have setup a temporary online streaming service where you can 'sample' the new station. You'll then be able to decide whether buying a DAB+ radio is worthwhile or not.

The streaming service is simply connected to a DAB+ receiver tuned to MyMP. To listen, point your favourite media player (such as Windows Media Player or Winamp) to:

http://stream.webdevsys.com:8000/mymp.m3u

Due to bandwidth limitations, a maximum of 4 listeners can listen to this stream at any one time. Service availability is not guaranteed.

Note: we are NOT affiliated with MyMP or Pacific Star, the owners of the station. We are only providing this service as a courtesy to prospective listeners so they can make an informed decision on whether they should purchase a DAB+ receiver or not.

Please let us know what you think of the new digital radio station.

Update 13 May 2011: MyMP now appears to have brought back their announcers! The line up includes Mark Johnson and John Tamb. The station now seems less automated and the music selections have improved, with noticeably less repetition, as was the case in the preceeding months.

I miss 3MP, especially Peter O'Callaghan. The station was run on a shoe string and a bit daggy but it represented a bit of my past, and now its gone. I mostly like what I hear on MyMP, although that bloody real estate ad is becoming a nuisance. Two scenarios: MTR is dropped at the end of 2010 due to abysmal ratings and MP is reinstated or DMG agree to sell the licence for what used to be Vega and MP is broadcast on that FM frequency.

great to see a lot of great support for the old 3mp, i too miss it a lot. i am 42 and remember the radio on the bench being on 3mp from morning to night when i was a kid. i still have my grandfathers old valve radio and used to listen to coxy's jukebox every saturday on it. what became of the excellent presenters? my saturday nights without coxy are just not the same. what is done is done i cant see them changing it back, no amount of venting on here will help, the ratings will do the talking i guess. you could blame the government for forcing everyone to go digital (tv and radio) from what i read above mymp is not the same as 3mp so i will not buy a digital radio.

They keep playing the stupid ad called Blue House Rise and this is no good. However, your songs are good but you keep playing the same stuff over and over again.Could you please start playing some new stuff, the Lighthouse Family song "High" is a good one to play.Could you please start playing the 90's and 80's music. If you keep playing the ad Blue House rise over and over again, people won't listen to the station.
Jono likes listening to MyMp and could you please tell me when you'll get a new website for MyMP.
admin, Sat, 19 Jun 2010 03:39 pm:
Well, if you think about it, they've got to pay the bills one way or another. It's just as well that there's only one ad being played each half hour, unlike other stations which cram up to 10 minutes of ads per hour. I believe that as more listeners tune into MyMP, the more the owner will start monetising it by playing more ads.

Because not everyone owns a DAB+ radio at present, advertisers aren't too keen on spending money advertising on a station with few listeners. At least the Blue Hills Rise ad isn't too annoying, plus you get nearly a full hour's worth of music every hour. Enjoy it while it lasts.

We (29 & 30), have also been spending our relaxing evenings listening to 3MP for years! By God we are so f#!*:/g pissed off,not only that we were'nt given a decent amount of prior notice, or that there were no other options than to buy a digital radio, but mostly how much they have changed the style of the music played (now on MyMP)!!! Are we listening to 3MP or that sleazy station called MIX FM (VIC 101.1)? We are in love and have an immense respect for it, therefore we like to celebrate it every day, and one of our favourite ways of celebrating it is to listen to relaxing music with beautiful lyrics! WE UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO MOVE WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY, BUT YOU PEOPLE,(WHOEVER YOU ARE), ARE COMPLETE ASSHOLES FOR CHANGING THE MUSIC!!!

I am nearly 40 and have listened to 3MP on and off for years, but am simply delighted with the new MyMP. Finally there's a station that plays the songs I want to hear. I get all my news during the week from ABC radio, and on weekends now listen to MyMP. I don't need hourly news bulletins and love the continuous music, with virtually no ads, interruptions or DJ comments. The mix of music is great too, with recent songs as well as some old daggy stuff, and lost 70s and 80s songs I haven't heard played on the radio for years. Keep it up.

Having listened to the station 3mp from the day it started till the day it was destroyed, I cannot believe the new management / owners took away what was an absolute winning combination of Music & presenters .. there was & still is not another station as good as 3MP .. both music & presenters
My MP lacks as it does not have the talented presenters ie Shawn Cosgrove & Peter O'Callaghan, & indeed all the great presenters, it also lacks with out the news, traffic & other regular segments & comments from the presenters .. As a long time advertiser of the station .. we cannot believe how they have destroyed a winning formula, & we have withdraw our advertising from MTR as it was not bringing us any results - wheras 3MP did
Here's hoping someone will see sense & bring back the 3MP music & showmanship mix

Even with the most recent radio ratings for MTR being lower than any survey that 3MP had in it's entire run, the owners of this joint venture seems to be confident that there is room for another talk back station. I don't believe this to be the case and Melbourne has started to vote with its scan button in the car and at home. Magic 1278 in the same most recent survey have nearly doubled their audience. What does that say Pacific Star & Macquarie?? Magic isn't a 3MP but they have tweaked their play list slightly in the past 2 months to grab some of the 3MP audience. And a small "Rumor" for die hard fans of the 3MP genre, Magic is in the process of expanding their back catalogue and current play lists. Keep an ear the AM BAND in the lead up to spring/summer 2010. How do I know this you may ask? Family member just happens to be in an office (unnamed) that deals with broadcasting rights for copyrighted material but can't say more for obvious reasons. 3MP may be off the AM band for now but watch this space. As a regular listener of 3MP over the years, if there is any truth to this "rumor" then I'm going to have smiles from ear to ear. Think if it as a knock out blow that the owners of 3AW/MAGIC may give their so called rivals. Wait and see I guess. MYMP has to evolve and expand to survive. As I'm typing this I'm listening to the tunes on this stream and it sounds great, A welcome voice came up just before back announcing station ID "It was Cozy" Shaun must of recorded a few station id's before getting the boot.

I miss 3MP,especially in the morning and at weekends. Shaun,Peter O'Callaghan,Dean Mathers from years ago were all like personal friends you met everyday. I saw so many shows - Stevie Wonder, George Benson etc.coach journeys to the Cuckoo, Tulip Festival all thanks to 3MP. I heard Peter recently on Magic but where is Shaun? I suppose there's no going back even if MTR is a failure.

Hi guys,

I used to listen to the old 3MP with my Mum and Dad. I used to love Dave Barnett as a presenter and Jane Holmes. All the presenters were great. But I now have a dab radio and I must say the playlist is great. The only thing lacking is a dj and a more bit more of a mix of songs. Also My Mp it would be good if you could on the dab radio show the artist and song that I am listening to.

I am 38 years o,d and have been an avid listener of 3MP for at least 15 years (much to my wifes' chagrin). I recently bought a stereo system with a digital radio and discovered MyMp. It was like christmas. I thought 3MP was gone forever. If I had have known MyMp was broadcast on digital radio only I would have purchased a digital radio ages ago. Needless to say my wife is not impressed now that I listen to MP again instead of FM.

I hope MTR (Melbourne Talk Radio) is dropped by year's end and Price moves back to Sydney where he came from. We all couldn't do with this trashy talk station any longer, plus incidentally, it now only has 1.1 percent of customers listening, so let's keep it going down, and support for 3MP going up!

Has Mark Johnson got a DJ system
in his office and how does he run the MyMp station. How does he select the songs that are played?
I enjoy your music but please stop playing the same songs over and over again.Could you please play the Lighthouse Family song "High" once or twice every so often.

Am I right to say that Mark Johnson and co have the best interests of listeners to MTR and the gormer 3MP at heart?
I emailed Steve Price and Suggested to him that he suggests to Oglivy Melbourne to Advertise MTR 1377 on Channel Ten to gain listers from the 18 to 39 demographic as well young families to MTR 1377 tyen Mtr will have people saying yes to MTR 1377.

When they switched 3MP to talkback, not only did they ruin it for Melbourne, they also ruined it for Adelaide.

You see, their transmitter is located in Rowville, with a directional antenna (most likely a phased array) that directs the signal West-north-west in a narrow beam. I lived in Clayton at one stage and the signal absolutely boomed in there. In fact, I can still measure 1377 KHz at S9+20db in many inner south eastern suburbs of Melbourne. This is about twice as strong as the other heavyweights (3AW, Magic, etc).

And yes, for those in Melbourne who have to deal with those noisy, trashy tram and train lines, of course there's going to be interference. But here's some news for you - other AM stations are equally affected. So I don't know what the fuss is all about.

The signal beam is quite narrow. It was originally targeted to the Mornington Peninsula (hence the callsign MP), but also had a side effect of reaching areas such as Geelong across the bay and parts of SA, who get the signal loud and clear via skywave at night. Hence the reason for the comments from disgruntled listeners in Adelaide who also enjoyed this once beautiful station.

The inability to receive Melbourne's DAB+ signals from SA is another slap in the face of Adelaideans - VHF cannot propagate by skywave. So they can't even listen to MyMP.

Music that you could once relax to and fall asleep with is now replaced with right-wing talkback trash. Most of it Sydney 2GB trash to be exact. Enough said.

"Test V" is Vision Australia Radio's test signal. The music playing there is purely for testing only.

They will put their own programming in fairly soon and they are in progress of upgrading their studios and broadcast equipment.

So don't keep your hopes up - the music will not be there to stay - Test V will become a Digital-only station that compliments 1179 kHz, rather than simulcasting it. There are so many niche programmes on 1179, they are eventually going to spill over to their digital radio broadcasts.

Anonymous, Tue, 15 Feb 2011 10:55 am:
Jason, you're dreaming!

Having the well established heavyweight radio stations merge is as likely as two of the biggest banks merging. It simply will not happen.

The ACCC and ACMA would not allow it even if the radio networks agreed to merge. If you remember way back many years ago, at one stage, one company owned all of 3AW, Magic and 3MP. The then ABA (before it became the ACMA) disallowed this so they ended up selling off 3MP.

If you think all 3AW staff will relocate to Swan Street, you're dreaming again! 3AW only recently moved into a brand new studio last year. They made a huge investment into their business so what you are suggesting is simply ludicrous.

I suggest you don't bother emailing your ridiculous suggestions to Macquarie. They'll probably just delete it without even thinking much of you.

For those in Melbourne, you can still listen to other stations that play music similar to the original 3MP.

If your receiver is sensitive enough, you can pick up 7BU Classic Hits from Burnie Tasmania on 558 KHz. Their signal strength varies greatly with location, but during the day, they operate at full power and can be heard in many parts of southern Victoria as long as you are away from interfering power and tram lines. You will get the best results from your car radio. If you're indoors, you'll need to keep your receiver well away from computers and TVs.

7BU seem to reduce their transmitter power at night to prevent interference to the rest of Australia because medium wave signals propagate extremely well over water and skywave. You'll need a good outdoor antenna to be able to pick them up at night. A shielded magnetic loop antenna also works quite well.

For night time listening, try "Easy Mix Ten 71" on 1071 KHz. They are located in Bendigo, and play music with an uncanny resemblance to MyMP. As a bonus, they have real DJs, who provide a wider range of music than MyMP's seemingly static playlist. They also relay the news from Southern Cross Broadcasting, so you won't miss out on what is happening. You will need to wait until after sunset to be able to pick up 1071 via skywave. Their signal varies with the ionospheric conditions, so there will be a bit of signal fading at times. and JASON YOU ARE A %@!#*HEAD AND A SON OF A B*TCH!!

Melissa from Ferntree Gully, Graham from Ferntree Gully Adam from Wanturna South, Bill from Glen Waverly and other people I know, those who I have met and those who I have never met.
MTR 1377 will go places in Melbourne.

MTR 1377 has as much right to be in Melbourne as anyone else so why should they go back to Sydney?
What if MYMP merged with Magic 1278 and became Magic Plus?

Jonno, Ken & all 3MP listeners
There was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald last week though I cannot remember what day it was printed that told us that John Singleton'sw MacQuarie Radio Network are talking about buying Fairfax Medai's Radio assets including 3AW693/Magic 1278, since Fairfax Media appointed their New CEO in Greg Hywood they are deciding to take a new direction.
Watch tis space 3MP Listeners and you will see posibly MYMP and Magic Merging as well as MTR and 3AW Merging.

I think MyMp should become more of an easy listening station and get rid of Glen Ridge as there's too much talking and I think there should be more easy listening music instead.

Hi All,
3MP is back and hopefully forever. It's already better than MyMp as it's playing easy listening songs from the 60s,70s and 80s.However,I think it could be improved even more by playing plenty of easy listening songs from the 90s including regularly playing the song "High" by Lighthouse Family which is a brilliant easy listening song from the 90s which not many other radio stations in Melbourne play anymore.

I used to listen to 3MP when I am in my car however as I drive mainly at night and on the weekends I have noticed that the news during those periods comes out of Sydney which is so annoying who wants to know about Sydney news and the sport is always about rugby. I have changed the dial to a station that gives me Melbourne news

can't believe that there is no longer a music station on the AM band in Melbourne. I have tried Smooth but I am sorry it is like pretence scripted radio. Please someone bring back a music station on the AM band that plays all of the favourites from the 60's and 70's.
